The Kansas City VAMC is recruiting for three
full time Nurse Practitioners (NP) that will work in a hospitalist role. The NP-Hospitalist's will coordinate care of surgical and vascular patients as well as consultation. The NP-Hospitalist's will be responsible for management of inpatients during the evening, night and weekend hours. The NP-Hospitalist will work closely with assigned specialty service(s) patients to assess, coordinate and provide direct care in collaboration with providers and team members. These efforts will result in more efficient and effective care management of the identified population groups and impoved customer satisfaction. He/She must have the ability to function in stressful situations, to diagnose problems and work toward solutions.

Tours of duty will vary, but coverage will be! during the evening, night and weekend hours. Some weekend rot! ation will be required. This
position is supervised by the Surgical Service Chief and is part of the Surgical
Service Line.

First area of consideration will be
given to permanent Kansas City VAMC employees. Internal and External Candidates
will be considered.

This
announcement is open for four weeks. However, first referrals will be made

NOTE: Applicant's education and length of nursing practice
(experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in
determining the grade and step of the applicant selected.

KEY REQUIREMENTS

Must be proficient in written and spoken English DUTIES:
The Hospitalist is a Nurse Practitioner who is responsible
for the coordination of care of surgical and vascular patients and
consultation. The Mid-level Hospitalist will responsible for management of
inpatients during the evening, night and weekend hours. The incumbent will work
closely with assigned specialty service(s) patients to assess, coordinate and
provide direct care in collaboration with providers and team members. These
efforts will result in more efficient and effective care management of the
identified population groups and improved customer satisfaction. Prescriptive
authority requirements include evidence of national certification and
completion of! upper division or continuing education in pharmacology. Must have
! current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Duties
may include but are not limited to the following: Provides ongoing care, including preventive care, to selected
patients under the supervision of the responsible physician. Screen outpatients
to determine their need for further health care. Perform a complete physical
examination of patients and pre-op preparation. Make rounds on inpatients
during the off tour, including documenting a clinical note on all inpatients
under their care in the medical records. Provide wound care and debridement
under a physician's direction. Provide education and counseling of the patient
and the patient's family in preventive care, medical condition and prescribed
treatments. Coordinate Same Day Surgery admission and discharges, social work
needs, physical and occupational therapy, patient education with ambulatory
surgery staff physician. Perform rounds on surgery service inpa! tients,
including the ICU patients. Respond to Emergency Room consults on off tours.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC

REQUIREMENTS:

  • U.S. citizenship.
Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified
citizens in accordance with VA Policy.

  • Full unrestricted
Licensure, Certification, or Registration required

  • Graduate of a
school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting
agency and accredited by one of the
following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the
applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNAC) or
The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). In cases of graduates of
foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active
and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of gradua! tion from an
approved school of professional nursing. The completio! n of coursework
equivalent to a nursing degree in a MSN Bridge Program that qualifies for
professional nursing registration constitutes the completion of an approved
course of study of professional nursing. Students should submit the certificate
of professional nursing to sit for the NCLEX to the VA along with a copy of the
MSN transcript. (Reference VA Handbook 5005, Appendix G6)

  • Current, full,
active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a
State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or
the District of Columbia.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE
REQUIREMENTS: MSN and APN
certification required.

GRADE DETERMINATIONS:
Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of
an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of
nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Co! llaboration and Scientific
Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential
core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel.

Physical
Requirements: This position requires
visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity.
This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing,
stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects
may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and
contaminated materials and may be required! to don protective clothing in
isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may
occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium,
dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible,
sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations,
able to shift priorities based on patient needs.

While performing the duties of this job
the employee is frequently required to stand, walk, and bend and reach with
hands and arms. This position must have good manual dexterity and keyboarding
skills. Must be able to express or exchange ideas by means of the spoken word.
This position must obtain impressions through the eyes of shape, size,
distance, motion, color or other characteristics of objects. Must be able to
view and read information on computer screens. The position must be able to
occasionally lift and/or move 45 pounds or more. T! his position must be able to
carry 25 pounds short distances.
