The Public Safety Agent is responsible for tasks that are essential to providing a memorable experience for our guests and community members, by ensuring that our venues are safe and welcoming.

As the Public Safety Agent you will:

  • Patrol facility; on foot (at times walking, at times running);use of a department vehicle; provides protection against trespass, vandalism, theft, fire and other threats
  • Provide excellent customer service when answering questions and providing information to the public; investigates complaints and recommends necessary corrective action to resolve complaints
  • Check facilities and equipment for needed maintenance and repairs; turns lights and alarms on and off; locks/unlocks areas as assigned
  • Maintain time, equipment use, incident records and any other DSS forms and logs as required
  • Monitor fire alarm systems and is responsible for executing the facility's emergency procedures in the event of an emergency. Responds to alarms and interacts with various internal and external departments to coordinate, plan and take appropriate action
  • Monitor video surveillance and building access system according to pre-established procedures
  • Apprehend, detains and arrests persons who violate local, state and federal laws
  • Assist medical personnel by directing traffic, crowd control and securing needed equipment
  • Build and maintain positive relationships and contribute to a positive team atmosphere; engage others in ways that foster respect and trust
  • Encourage and appreciate diversity in people and ideas - seek to understand the perspectives of others
  • Potential ability to assist at other Metro Visitor Venues, including the Portland'5 Centers for the Performing Arts and the Expo Center
Attributes for success:
  • Knowledge of materials, methods, practices and equipment used in facility security services
  • Knowledge of safe work practices
  • Knowledge of effective techniques for crowd control
  • Be able to provide clear, concise written and oral; instructions, findings and corrective recommendations
  • Ability to maintain operational records and prepare related reports, including ability to document daily activities in the Daily Log
  • Ability to provide excellent customer service
  • Ability to remain calm in emergency situations while providing for patron, vendor and employee safety
  • Ability to run from one area of the facility to another in an emergency situation
  • Ability to read and comprehend Fire Alarm system panel to determine location of fire
  • Ability to protect one's self in an altercation
  • Intermediate knowledge in the use of computers and their use; ability to learn computer programs
  • Skill and ability in administering First Aid and CPR

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:
  • High school diploma or GED; AND
  • One year of responsible experience in providing security for a large facility; OR
  • Any combination of education and experience which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities required to perform the job.
Required:
This position requires the possession of (or the ability to obtain upon hire):
  • Security certification and/or DPSST certification from the State of Oregon
  • Current Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certificate,
  • First Aid
  • Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification
  • Valid driver's license at time of hire
  • A physical assessment at time of hire; which simulates the essential job tasks for this position, will be administered to all applicant "finalists" for any Security Agent position. Offers of hire will be made contingent upon successful results of this assessment.
Work location: This position will primarily work at the Oregon Convention Center on-site. Due to the nature of the work there is no option for teleworking.

COMPENSATION AND REPRESENTATION
Based on our internal equity review and candidates qualifications the appointment will typically be made between $25.94 – $30.03 per hour. The full range of this role is $25.94 - $34.76.

This position is represented by ILWU Local 28 and is classified as a Facility Security Agent (click to read the full classification). Classification descriptions are typically written broadly and do not include the specific duties and responsibilities of the position.
