The AmeriCorps Instructional Support Team is a single issue area program developing specialization in the education-school success national issue area. The focus of this program is rural pre-school to 12th grade students and compliments the State's goals and highlights the national AmeriCorps priority of youth and children. The mission of the AIST is as follows to provide each student, through well defined instructional programs, diversified extracurricular activities, the opportunity to achieve maximum academic growth and to further enhance students' opportunities in leading successful and productive lives. The activities of the members' service will be based in all Butler County School Schools (pre-k/Bright Beginnings through 12th grade classes) as well as assisting with community organizations and events. The AIST members will provide tutoring, homework assistance and early intervention based upon the student's individual needs. Effective tutoring skills and prohibited activities is part of the required Instructional Support Certification pre-service training and subsequent trainings. The classroom teacher will select the students for the program based, in part, on their school attendance, academic performance, and attitude toward school demonstrated during the first 9-week grading period. The members' pre-service training program will be completed during their first week in October prior to beginning service at their assigned sites. The attention each student receives from the AmeriCorps member will form a lasting relationship and will result in students wanting to attend school regularly with a more positive attitude toward school. The members' direct service activities will support the needs being addressed by the program.
