Description
Provides technical scrub skills in the operating room during surgical procedures and assists surgical team as needed in any other capacity, according to established p rocedures.
Principle Accountabilities:
1. Assist in preparing operating room for next day cases by setting up room equipment, "pulling cases" accurately, and reporting to supervisor/material management items that are needed and not available.
2. Prepares operating room for use on day of surgery by obtaining equipment, instrumentation including available vendor trays, and assists circulator with room set up. Assists with room turn over and preparation for cases following.
3. Appropriately prepares for surgical case(s) by obtaining equipment, supplies, and instrumentation including vendor trays. Assists with preparation and breakdown of the operating room for each case assigned.
4. Responsible for obtaining specimen from the sterile field, and communicating the surgeon's choice of medium. Follows guidelines or specimen handoff from the Operating Room to the Laboratory.
5. Demonstrates and participates with pos itioning of the patient, maintaining safe functional alignment, exposure of surgical site and to provide physical support as it relates to specific surgical procedures in the Operating Room.
6. Performs verification of medication and implant verification to include name, size, laterality, dosage, and expiration date with the Circulator.
7. Performs "No Thing Left Behind" surgical counts.
8. Verifies that all medications are labeled with medication name, dose, and expiration date.
9. Demonstrates principles of aseptic and sterile technique and counts of sponges, needles, and instruments.

Education
High school graduate or equivalent required.
Graduate of a surgical technology program preferred. Certified Surgical Te chnician certification preferred

Experience
Either two years of recent hospital experience or graduation from an approved surgical technician program preferred.
Evaluative skills necessary for patient safety.

- Ability to push and pull equipment weighing in excess of 100 lbs using proper techniques and with assistance as necessary.
- Manual dexterity, coordination and skillful use of hands when working with patient and equipment, which may include pushing buttons, adjusting dials, turning on/off switches, buckling, holding and positioning limbs/body parts, etc.
- Ability to physically perform necessary documentation in writing or use of tape recorder.
