The Perioperative Education Coordinator assists the OR Nurse Manager to provide the best quality effective and safe care with a commitme! nt to excellence. The Education Coordinator will conduct educational needs assessments for clinical staff along with developing and implementing educational plans to meet hospital-wide and department goals. The Education Coordinator will implement and evaluate departmental orientation for clinical and support staff. The Education Coordinator will be strongly clinical and will work with the Perioperative Clinical Coordinators, assigned preceptors and charge nurses to ensure a standardized orientation process. Responsibilities include performing direct patient care (circulating) & on call requirements in the area of âgeneralâ specialty in order to demonstrate clinical competence. Responsible for continuing education and staff development, assures staff participation involving assigned regulatory checklists. The Education Coordinator is responsible for required annual competencies and programs and to provide leadership on Joint Commission regulatory standards relative to e! ducation. The Education Coordinator is considered a leadership! position. As a leader, the individual will understand that he/she is always âon stageâ, modeling honesty, integrity, strength of character and leading by example.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Directs/Supports team members to ensure quality of care is based on the department goals to achieve/exceed performance expectations as it relates to education and competency.
Serves as a resource to members of the surgery team for educational, regulatory and competency issues.
Shares accountability to promote effective teamwork among staff.
Participates in quality improvement activities. Motivate team members to implement best practice to provide an excellent patient experience.
Completes probationary performance evaluations for new hires. Coordinates orientee schedules, including technical competency verification by self and preceptor with documentation of orienteeâs strengths, weaknesses and if needed, development ! of a focused education plan.
Coordinates/provides initial orientation of new staff (nurses, techs, secretaries, retractor holders, nurse externs. Included in the orientation process are all physician paramedical employees, licensed health professionals, and medical students.
Responsible for contract employees, ensuring that each individual has completed all required paperwork and orientation, and provided Southeast Missouri Hospital O.R. with copies of documentation including, but not limited to:
a. Certification as appropriate
b. Licensure
c. Southeast Hospital orientation or MARK Booklet
d. Immunization verification (etc)
e. Copy of contract with company and Southeast Hospital
Provides input for annual performance evaluations as directed by Nurse Manager/Director.
Develops coordinates and administers required annual competencies (CareLearning/Department Specific Annual Education Program/Depar! tment Specific Safety Program/Waived Testing/Department Specific Compet! ency Checklist) and safety drills for all levels of staff.
Delivers training (organizes in-services) and education for nurses and clinical staff as determined by needs assessments.
Acts as Laser Safety Officer.
Acts as liaison to Organizational Patient Safety Officer.
Assures regulatory checklists are completed as assigned (Defib checks, Hand hygiene, Code Show-me. IUS Documentation).
Assures staff meets requirements of current CPR status and fire extinguisher training prior to expiration.
Shall be assigned to departmental and organizational committees related to staff education and competency.
Shall maintain current knowledge in, but not limited to, the following; Perioperative Services policies and procedures, medical staff by-laws, hospital and department quality management process, the Joint Commission standards, the Missouri Nurse Practice Act, and AORN: Perioperative Standards and Recommended Practices.
Participates in annual review of Perioperative Department specific policies and procedures as well as Organizational Policies and Procedures related to Perioperative Services processes and practice.
Shall meet routinely with Educational Department to assure consistency with policies regarding competency and clinical education across the organization.
Ensure that the department meets the needs of patient age groups, including all stages of the human aging cycle, through appropriate orientation, training, and continuing education.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications/Requirements
Current licensure as a registered nurse in the state of Missouri.
Bachelor of Science Degree. CNOR preferred with expectation of completing certification within one year of assuming position.
Minimum of 3 yearsâ experience in the Perioperative Department is required. Exceptions may be made based on overall leadership! experience, the interview process and references.
Be familiar! with the skills necessary and able to discuss and demonstrate management of clinical staff education as well as supportive staff education of the Perioperative Services Department.
Completion of orientation requirements of the hospital and Surgical Specialty.
BLS required.
Must be able to read, write and speak English.
