The Kansas City VAMC is expanding its program fo! r Nurse Practitioners in a hospitalist role and there are currently three vacancies for full time Nurse Practitioners (NP) to coordinate care of general surgical and vascular patients as well as consultation. The NP Hospitalist will responsible for management of inpatients during the evening, night and weekend hours. The NP will work closely with assigned specialty service(s) patients to assess, coordinate and provide direct care in collaboration with providers and team members. These efforts will result in more efficient and effective care management of the identified population groups and improved customer satisfaction. He/She must have the ability to function in stressful situations, to diagnose problems and work toward solutions.

This announcement is open until filled. First referrals will be made after October 29, 2012. Additional referrals will be made as necessary after that date until position is filled.

First area of consideration will be given to! permanent Kansas City VAMC employees. Internal and External C! andidates will be considered. This announcement may be used to fill identical positions vacated within 6 months of any selections made from the original announcement.

Salary and grade will be determined upon qualifications and experience. .

Applicants must not be listed on the Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) Office of Inspector General Sanctions database. Clinical privileges must be recommended by the Chief, Staff/Professional Standards Board and granted by the Director of Kansas City VAMC. The provider must provide complete credentialing and privileging information in a timely, expeditious way to the Credentialing Office. Employment is contingent on the ability of the provider to be credentialed by the VA Credentialing Office.

DUTIES:
The Hospitalist is a Nurse Practitioner who is responsible for the coordination of care of general surgical and vascular ! patients and consultation. The Mid-level Hospitalist will responsible f! or management of inpatients during the evening, night and weekend hours. The incumbent will work closely with assigned specialty service(s) patients to assess, coordinate and provide direct care in collaboration with providers and team members. These efforts will result in more efficient and effective care management of the identified population groups and improved customer satisfaction. Prescriptive authority requirements include evidence of national certification and completion of upper division or continuing education in pharmacology. Must have current Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Duties may include but are not limited to the following: Provides ongoing care, including preventive care, to selected patients under the supervision of the responsible physician. Screen outpatients to determine their need for further health care. Perform a complete physical examination of patients and pre-op preparation. Make rounds on inpatients during the off tour, inc! luding documenting a clinical note on all inpatients under their care in the medical records. Provide wound care and debridement under a physician's direction. Provide education and counseling of the patient and the patient's family in preventive care, medical condition and prescribed treatments. Coordinate Same Day Surgery admission and discharges, social work needs, physical and occupational therapy, patient education with ambulatory surgery staff physician. Perform rounds on surgery service inpatients, including the ICU patients. Respond to Emergency Room consults on off tours.

Relocation expenses will not be reimbursed.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
Citizen of the United States. Graduate of a school of professional nursing approved by the appropriate State-accrediting agency and accredited by one of the following accrediting bodies at the time the program was completed by the applicant: The National League for Nursing Accrediting Commission (NLNA! C) or The Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE).

M! ust be a Registered Nurse/Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner possessing an unrestricted current license with at least one year experience preferred. The Nurse Practitioner's certification must be in Adult or Family Practice to be eligible for this position.

Current, full, active, and unrestricted registration as a graduate professional nurse in a State, Territory or Commonwealth (i.e., Puerto Rico) of the United States, or the District of Columbia . In cases of graduates of foreign schools of professional nursing, possession of current, full, active and unrestricted registration will meet the requirement of graduation from an approved school of professional nursing. Must be proficient in spoken and written English .

The incumbent must possess excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Leadership and presentation skills are required. Demonstrated knowledge of computer systems is required. Must meet the physical demands of the job.

Applic! ant's education and length of nursing practice (experience) will be considered by a Nurse Professional Standards Board in determining the grade and salary of the applicant selected. Experience as a RN will be evaluated to determine if the experience is of an acceptable level of quality with regard to the following four dimensions of nursing: Practice, Professional Development, Collaboration and Scientific Inquiry. Each dimension of practice has criteria that demonstrate essential core competencies for VHA Nursing Personnel. Education/Experience Requirements:

Nurse II - A BSN with approximately 2-3 years of experience, or ADN or Diploma in Nursing and a bachelors degree in a related field and approximately 2-3 years experience o! r a Master's degree in nursing or related field with a BSN and approxim! ately 1-2 years experience, or a Doctoral degree in nursing or meets basic requirements for appointment and has doctoral degree in a related field with no experience. Nurse III - Master's degree in nursing or related field with BSN and approximately 2-3 years experience or Doctoral degree in nursing or related field and approximately 2-3 years experience.

Physical Requirements : The person in this position must be able to navigate all areas of the VA Kansas City Healthcare System, and must be physically and mentally able to perform the essential functions of the position without hazard to themselves or others; stand, walk, bend, stoop, raise arms above shoulder level, climb stairs, use a ke! yboard, transfer/move adult male & female patients using appropriate assistive devices, push/pull an occupied gurney, and perform all other activities of the position without restrictions. The environment's pace can vary from steady to a sometimes fast pace requiring handling of multiple priorities, frequent, sometimes intense customer interactions, and the ability to adapt to frequent changes in a sometimes noisy environment. There may be the need to use personal protective equipment to prevent exposure to disease, illness and hazardous materials. The use of Safe Patient Handling equipment and protocols are strictly enforced to promote patient and staff safety.
